Mike’s Monthly Maintenance Minute: RV Water Heater Maintenance Tips

Welcome back to another edition of Mike’s Monthly Maintenance Minute, brought to you by Cozy Camper. This month, we’re diving into one of the most important systems in your RV — the water heater.

Whether you’ve got a traditional tank-style water heater or a modern tankless unit, a little regular care goes a long way toward keeping things running smoothly and avoiding costly breakdowns.

Tankless RV Water Heater Maintenance

Tankless RV water heaters are great for endless hot showers, but they do require some maintenance to keep them performing at their best:

  • Periodic de-scaling: Mineral buildup can reduce efficiency and cause damage over time. Running a descaling solution through your system as recommended in your owner’s manual will help prevent this.

  • Filter cleaning: Tankless models usually have small inlet filters that can clog with debris. Make sure to check and clean these regularly.

Tank-Style Water Heaters

If your RV has a tank-type water heater (Suburban, Atwood, etc.), your maintenance routine looks a little different:

  • Change the anode rod (Suburban models): The anode rod protects your tank from corrosion, but it gets used up over time. Replacing it when it’s more than 50% worn will extend the life of your water heater.

  • Flush the tank: Sediment and scale build up in the bottom of tank-style heaters. Flushing it out at least once a season keeps the system efficient and helps prevent damage.

A Few Extra Tips

  • Always check your owner’s manual before attempting maintenance, as recommendations vary between manufacturers.

  • A little preventative care now can save you from expensive repairs (and cold showers) later.
