Were RVs Ever Built Better? A Texas RV Inspection Perspective

If you’ve spent any time shopping for an RV in Texas—Austin, San Antonio, Dallas/Fort Worth, or anywhere in between—you’ve probably heard it:

“Don’t buy anything newer. RVs were built better back in the day.”

As a Texas RV inspector serving Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Fort Worth, I hear this almost daily during RV inspections. Buyers specifically request older units thinking they’re avoiding problems. The assumption is simple: older RV equals better RV quality.

But is that actually true?

The Reality of RV Quality in Texas Inspections

After performing RV inspections across San Antonio, Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, New Braunfels, and surrounding Texas markets, one pattern is clear:

Older RVs are not immune to problems. In many cases, they have more.

When we inspect older units, especially those over 10 to 15 years old, we routinely find water intrusion in roofs, slideouts, and floors, deferred maintenance issues, electrical and plumbing problems, and structural concerns that have developed over time.

In Texas, where heat, humidity, and UV exposure are relentless, these issues are often amplified. The idea that older RVs hold up better doesn’t match what we actually see during real-world RV inspections.

What History Says About RV Quality

Instead of relying on opinions, we looked at archived data—old articles, blog posts, and RV owner discussions from years past.

Here are the sources referenced:

These sources show something surprising. Complaints about RV quality, dealership delays, and repair issues were widespread well before 2020. Many of the same concerns buyers have today were being discussed years, even decades, ago.

RV Inspections in Austin, San Antonio, and DFW Tell the Same Story

Whether it’s an RV inspection in Austin, a pre-purchase inspection in San Antonio, or a buyer walkthrough in Dallas/Fort Worth, the pattern doesn’t change.

Every RV has issues. Every single one.

Some are minor. Some are major. But the idea of a perfect era of RV manufacturing doesn’t hold up under inspection.

Many buyers chasing older RVs in Texas end up surprised when inspections reveal extensive problems, especially when maintenance has been inconsistent.

Has RV Quality Changed at All

There’s no question that RV production surged during the pandemic, and quality control took a hit. But stepping back, the broader trend looks more consistent than people think.

RV quality has always been variable. The difference today is awareness. Buyers are more informed, inspections are more common, and issues are more visible thanks to online content and shared experiences.

The Most Important Factor Inspection and Maintenance

If there’s one takeaway for RV buyers in Texas, Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas/Fort Worth, it’s this: the condition of an RV matters more than the year it was built.

A well-maintained newer RV can outperform a neglected older one every time. The only way to know what you’re actually buying is through a professional RV inspection.

Final Thoughts

The belief that RVs were built better back then is persistent, but the evidence doesn’t really support it. RVs have always had issues. The difference is whether you catch them before you buy.
