How to Winterize Your RV: A Step-by-Step Guide

As the temperatures drop, it's essential to winterize your RV to protect it from the harsh elements. Winterizing helps prevent damage to the plumbing system and other vital components, ensuring your RV is ready to roll when warmer weather returns. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process, including tips on using fuel stabilizers if your RV is equipped with a generator. And remember, Cozy Camper provides professional winterization services, repair, and pre-purchase inspections in Illinois and Texas. Let’s get started!

1. Gather Your Supplies for RV Winterization

Before you begin, make sure you have the following supplies. Visit our Amazon Storefront for these and more products:

  • RV-specific antifreeze (non-toxic)

  • A water heater bypass kit (if not already installed)

  • A siphon kit for the water pump

  • A socket wrench for the water heater drain plug

  • A fuel stabilizer (for RVs with generators)

2. Drain the Water System

Start by draining all water from the RV to prevent freezing and damage:

  • Turn Off the Water Heater: Allow it to cool before draining.

  • Open Low-Point Drains: These are located beneath the RV and allow the remaining water in the pipes to drain.

  • Drain Freshwater and Gray Water Tanks: Use a bucket to catch any residual water and avoid spills.

  • Flush the Toilet and Open Faucets: This ensures that all water is removed from the plumbing system.

3. Bypass and Drain the Water Heater

  • Use the Water Heater Bypass: If your RV doesn't have a bypass, install one. This prevents antifreeze from filling the water heater.

  • Remove the Drain Plug: Use a socket wrench to drain the water heater completely.

4. Add RV Antifreeze

Adding antifreeze to the water lines prevents them from freezing:

  • Set Up the Siphon Kit: Connect it to the water pump and place the other end in a bottle of RV antifreeze.

  • Turn On the Water Pump: This will draw antifreeze into the system.

  • Open Faucets One by One: Start with the farthest faucet from the water pump and let the antifreeze run through until you see a steady stream of pink liquid.

  • Flush the Toilet: Run antifreeze through the toilet as well to ensure the lines are protected.

5. Protect the Drains

Pour a small amount of RV antifreeze into each drain to protect the P-traps from freezing. This step prevents any residual water in the drain traps from expanding and causing damage.

6. Stabilize the Fuel (For RVs with Generators)

If your RV has a generator, using a fuel stabilizer is crucial:

  • Add the Fuel Stabilizer: Pour the recommended amount into the fuel tank.

  • Run the Generator: Let the generator run for about 10-15 minutes to ensure the stabilizer circulates through the system. This helps prevent fuel degradation during long storage periods.

7. Store Your RV Properly

Once your RV is winterized, it’s time to store it:

  • Cover the RV: Use a breathable RV cover or permanent structure to protect the exterior from snow, ice, and UV damage.

  • Disconnect Batteries: Remove and store them in a warm place to prevent freezing.

  • Check Tire Pressure: Inflate tires to the recommended PSI to avoid flat spots.
